Modeo(R) and Penthera(TM) Enter Into Engineering Services Agreement to Enhance Mobile TV Service Capabilities

April 16, 2007 at 8:40 AM EDT

HOUSTON and PITTSBURGH, April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Modeo(R), the mobile broadcast affiliate of Crown Castle International Corp. (NYSE: CCI), and Penthera Technologies, Inc. announced today that they have entered into an Engineering Services Agreement to enhance Modeo's Mobile TV service capabilities. This agreement complements the Mobile Broadcast Platform(TM) Version 2.0 Agreement recently signed and announced at the March 2007 CTIA event. The development of these service enhancements follows the success of Modeo's launch of its live commercial quality mobile beta service in New York City in December 2006.

Included in this agreement are components of the Mobile Broadcast Platform Version 2.0 (Penthera MBP 2.0), including upgrades to Modeo's broadcast head end, development of the Mediacast Server and improvements to the Modeo Smartphone user interface software. Modeo expects the implementation of these software enhancements to result in a rich suite of features and functionality aimed at improving the consumer experience. The service enhancements provide Modeo with the ability to offer mobile Digital Video Recording (DVR) functionality that enables users to both record and store their favorite programs on their mobile TV devices on a scheduled basis, as well as "impulse" recording while viewing live. Users will be able to pause, rewind and fast forward both live and stored content. Also featured as an enhancement is the ability to "mediacast" content, the term used to describe the broadcasting of individual content segments like movies, songs and prime time episodes that are then stored on the consumer's device. This mediacast content can be tailored to the individual preferences of each user, resulting in an expanded and personalized virtual channel lineup. The broadcast head end improvements are expected to also provide Modeo with the ability to insert advertisements into both live and mediacast programming.

In addition to the enhanced functionality, the planned service enhancements are expected to include the ability to improve picture quality and clarity, as well as reduce channel change time.

Modeo and Penthera will demonstrate selected enhanced mobile TV features during a news conference hosted by Modeo on Tuesday, April 17, from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time in Room N242 of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The news conference is open to media representatives and wireless and mobile TV industry analysts with NAB credentials. Modeo and Penthera also will host a series of private demonstrations this week. Those interested in a private demonstration should contact David Ramirez (Ramirez@modeo.com; mobile 210/421-9530) at Modeo or bizdev@penthera.com at Penthera.

"The recently compiled feedback from Modeo's commercial quality beta service in New York has affirmed users' preference and appetite for live, high quality mobile TV. In addition, users expressed a desire to augment the live experience with broad and personalized programming selections," commented Michael Ramke, president of Modeo. "We believe the service enhancements enabled by the Penthera 2.0 broadcast solution will help position Modeo to effectively deliver on the broad opportunity of mobile TV."

"Modeo is a mobile TV pioneer. Modeo has rolled out its first commercial quality live mobile TV beta service in New York City which incorporates Penthera's technology," said Sam Leinhardt, CEO of Penthera Technologies, a leading provider of mobile broadcast and multimedia software to operators worldwide. "Modeo and Penthera are working together to raise the bar to deliver the next generation of personalized, interactive mobile TV services for consumers, enabling features like push video on demand, DVR and click-to- vote capabilities."

More About Penthera Mobile Broadcast Platform 2.0

Penthera MBP 2.0 offers mobile operators a way to better utilize excess network resources by reliably tricklecasting - or broadcasting over time - files stored in their subscriber's mobile devices, which alleviates failed file delivery due to dropped or interrupted signals and the additional burden that issue puts on a network that's required to resend the same file multiple times.

Penthera MBP 2.0 enables error-free broadcast delivery of any media file to a broadcast-enabled handset. Mediacast currently supports the broadcast of video clips, full-length TV shows, podcasts, and MP3s. Receiver devices supported include mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), laptops and portable media players. With the Mediacast system enabled on their portable devices, consumers can access and play back virtually any type of media content whenever and wherever they want to.
